6 COTTON MAXIMIZATION PROJECT (CMP)
6.1 Experience in the past had made it evident that
breeder alone cannot achieve the desired
success in cotton production. Therefore, his efforts were augmented by the
disciplines like
agronomy, entomology, physiology etc. keeping this in view a package of
technology was
produced, and brought to the fields of the farmers. To demonstrate and transfer
the technology
Cotton Maximization Project was launched by PCCC during 1977-87. It proved
influential and
popular amongst the growers for increasing the cotton yield.
6.2 Project evaluation was entrusted to neutral
agencies, like the Punjab economic Research
Institute, Lahore for Punjab and Applied Economic Research Centre of Karachi
University for
Sindh.
6.3 Findings confirmed that CMP was a success and it
established the fact that cotton
yield can be further improved by identifying constraints and then removing them
one by one,
therefore, “TREAT COTTON FARMER KINDLY”.
6.4 It is also suggested that GOP and PCCC may give a
serious consideration to launching
a second phase of CMP in Sindh, Balochistan and Punjab.
